Cape Lookout - 26 Dec 2013
Leslie and I went out to Cape Lookout to check out the migrating whales. The weather was clear and near 50s...a great day for December. We saw lots of whales but most were a ways out.

Cooper Spur via Polallie ridge hike - July 12, 2013
A hike up to Cooper Spur via the Polallie Ridge trail #643 with Bruce Allan. The idea was to assess the washed out Timberline trail for a possible circumnavigation later in the year.
We would usually approach this hike by driving up to Cloud Cap and taking off from the Tilly Jane Campground. However, the area is heavily burned from the Dollar Lake fire in Aug-Sept 2011and there are dead trees falling all over the 9 mile access road to Cloud Cap so the FS has closed the road. So this meant that we start at the trailhead 3 miles below Tilly Jane and get in a bit extra hiking.
For change, we decided to hike up the Polallie Ridge trail and found it to be a nice hike. The canyon is impressive in places and there were not too many dead falls blocking the trail.

Mt Hood Hoo Ha route bike ride - 28 July 2013
69 miles, 4964' w/Bruce and Teri. 5:32 cycling time, 2:11 TZ 12.4 mph Avg.
Beautiful day, perfect temperature and the sweetest 7 miles of down hill (FR 42) in the state. Great views of Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams and Mt Jefferson.
BTW, this route was done by the Portland Wheelmen as the Mt. Hood Hoo Ha in 2007 (I did it that year) and 2008.
I think the "Timothy Lake the Back Way" route described in "75 Classic Rides - Oregon" (see attached) is the same route and I've mapped it out at http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2936766. It's a 68-mile loop with 4964' elevation gain along back-country forest service roads. There are no services along the route except for Little Crater Lake campground (restroom, water) at mile 28 and a ranger station (water) at mile 34.2, so you would need to carry food and water.

Exploratory ride from Rainier with Leslie - July 26, 2013
53 miles and >4000 ft. elevation.
Leslie and I started at the Rainer High School and headed up Fernhill road to Apiary. After a few miles on Apiary Road we turned onto Meisnner which is our route when we do Deer Island and up from St. Helens. It was familiar road down to Deer Island then a short 2-3 miles on Hwy 30 (actually a lot of it was on the old hwy which is like a frontage road now) to Tide Creek Road. It generally climbs from here...with lots of turns. Many farms and ranches up there with not much traffic. After following Leslie's excellent directions we eventually end up on Fernhill again. The ride finishes with a grind up Townsend Drive in Rainier.
All in all, a very nice ride but we'll probably make some modifications next time. Starting in Deer Island is good because it lets you finish with a nice downhill.

Ashley Paterson's Graduation and Family Reunion - June7-9, 2013
Family from out of town...Bertha Drury, Joan and Dani Terhaar, Sally, Tim and Becky Seubert, Tony Ackerman and Leslie Morgan, Bob, Kathy, Kristen and Gabe Ackerman.
The Idaho crew arrived on Thursday night and took up residence in 3 campers that Kathy had borrowed from friends and setup in the backyard. On Friday Tony and Leslie arrived from Portland. We had planned to visit Northwest Track but the guest of honor (i.e. Ashley) had last day school commitments. So we hung around, ate, visited and viewed some photo albums. Master Chef Marty cooked up a schrimp bowl with sausage and potatoes that was delicious.
After the sun went down on Friday night, Marty started up his bonfire in the back yard. To begin with, it was just old folks but then Ashley arrived with several carloads of her friends. They cranked up the music (??) and some of started to dance...basically, it was kicked up by Leslie and the rest of joined in. It was a lot of fun although the music is hard to dance to.
Saturday morning there was shopping at garage sales and the State surplus store. A few things were found which will probably end up in another garage sale in a few years. In the afternoon, Marty fired up the BBQ and started turning out some great burgers, chicken, brats and trout. There was lots of food and everyone jumped in. Marty's parents Paul and Joyce, his brothers Perry and ?? were there as well along with lots of others that I didn't retain their names. After some digestion and the crowd thinned out most everyone went to see the movie "Now you see it" and everyone enjoyed it.
Sunday morning we got together to say our good-byes and everyone headed out.

Pioneer Century - Canby, OR
55 mile, 3:05 TZ Leslie, Bruce & Teri.
Rode the Pioneer Century 55 mile route with Leslie, Teri and Bruce (who had done 45 mile loop earlier). Weather was beautiful and had Bruce's Birthday Beers at the Caufield House in Oregon City afterwards.
